How to pair your wedding band and engagement ring?

Wedding season is fast approaching. And if you've chosen this year to make your love come true, this guide will be perfect for you...

We wanted to give you the keys to combining your alliance and your engagement ring according to your taste, style and lifestyle. Whether you're looking for a classic, modern or personalized combination, we're here to guide you through every step of this important choice.

1) Should the wedding ring and engagement ring be worn on the same finger?

You don't have to wear your engagement ring and wedding band on the same finger. It's a tradition, and it's up to you to follow it... or not.

Historically, it's the wedding ring that goes on the finger first, then the engagement ring, so that thewedding ring is as close to the heart as possible (based on a medieval belief that a vein directly connected the left ring finger to the heart). But again, there are no rules: wear your rings according to what you like and what matches your engagement ring best.

In some cases, however, it is better to wear the wedding ring and engagement ring on two separate hands

For example, when the engagement ring is very original or voluminous, as the wedding band would go completely unnoticed or detract from the ring's design.

Or when the shape of the engagement ring is not compatible with a straight band (see our tips below).

Note: most people have one hand stronger than the other, and therefore a different finger circumference from one ring finger to the other. Putting the engagement ring on the right ring finger may therefore require some sizing.

2) What rules should I follow if I want my engagement ring and wedding band to be compatible?

First, choose a wedding band that matches the shape of the body (the band) of your engagement ring.

Next, match the width of the 2 rings. The easiest way is to opt for a wedding band of similar width or slightly thinner than the engagement ring, so as not to overshadow it.

We also recommend choosing the same gold color. Here again, the simplest choice is a wedding band made from the same alloy as the engagement ring.

Finally, play with our textures:

If you have an engagement ring with a shiny polished band, opt for a textured wedding band.

  • Our Isilde wedding band, with its faceted texture and brilliant yet discreet shine, is very easy to match with an engagement ring.

  • Our Sarita wedding band looks wonderful next to a pavé engagement ring, because its light-catching relief echoes the diamonds.

  • If your engagement ring is textured: pair it with a wedding band of a different texture. In our experience, varying textures makes the most sense. Here are the combinations that work best:

3) What do I do if my engagement ring and wedding band don't match?

Some engagement rings are difficult to match with a wedding band. For example, the Marguerite ring is in direct contact with the finger, so there is no space to slide a ring under the stone. This is also the case with antique rings whose basket (the part on which the stone or stones rest) is round, oval or rectangular in shape.

The first solution is to wear the engagement ring on the right hand, and the wedding ring on the left, to avoid swearing at each other.

The second alternative is made-to-measure. This allows you to create a wedding band that perfectly matches the contours of your engagement ring and follows its curves, or to imagine an "open" wedding band, which will be placed on either side of the stone.

4) Our tips for those who like to get off the beaten track

You don't really want to be like everyone else and you're open to our team's suggestions? Here are a few ideas to follow if you want an original engagement ring / wedding band combo!

  1. Vary the shapes: A wide wedding band can be paired with a thin engagement ring to create an unexpected contrast.
  2. Play with different gold colors. This mix can be a good idea, under a few conditions:

- Prefer a mix of red and white gold, rather than yellow and white gold, whose combination is not always pleasing to the eye.

- You can also combine 3 colors of gold by wearing 3 rings on your finger: your wedding ring, your engagement ring and, why not, a 2nd ring for a wedding anniversary, for example. In this case, we recommend white gold, red gold and yellow gold.

3. Combine very different textures for an unexpected result. For example, combine a Staël wedding band, with its rough, handcrafted texture, with a classic engagement ring. Or choose a wedding band with a very matt texture, contrasting with a very shiny engagement ring.

We hope you find these tips useful. All that's left is for you to choose your winning combo, and don't forget, all our rings are customizable. If you have an idea in mind or would like a very special, original ring, you can also have your jewel custom-designed.
