What color gold should I choose for my jewelry?

It's up to each of you to find the gold color that suits you best. The same metal will not necessarily suit both members of the couple, especially if you have very different complexions. Don't get stuck on one metal color and let yourself be surprised....

Warm shades: yellow gold, rose gold or red gold?

Fairmined rose-champagne gold wedding band.

Fairmined rose gold-champagne

Our Fairmined rose gold, contrary to its name, is not reserved for women: it is rather "champagne". Many gentlemen who were reluctant at first have finally converted to champagne rose gold during their visit to the workshop. Very few jewelers offer this subtle hue... Halfway between yellow and red gold, it suits almost all skin tones, from the whitest to the darkest. It is not what is usually presented to you as rose gold, it is an intermediate shade.

Fairmined red gold

Our Fairmined red gold: this is what most jewelers present to you as "rose" gold, but technically it is called "red". More intense, more coppery than rose gold, it may be best avoided for skin tones that are already naturally red. If you already have a "rose" gold engagement ring, you should choose the red one.

Fairmined yellow gold

Our Fairmined yellow gold has a sunny color. Its very soft hue might change your mind about yellow gold, or delight you even more. It's not a flashy yellow at all. And besides, isn't yellow the natural color of gold?

Cool shades: white gold palladium or white gold Fairmined?

Ring in 18-carat white gold by Fairmined, a Parisian artisan jeweler.

What you will find in most jewelry stores is rhodium-plated white gold. It is an alloy of 75% pure yellow gold (its natural color), and silver as well as copper and/or palladium. Because of its composition, white gold... is not really white, since the use of nickel in the alloy is forbidden because of the risk of allergies.

Raw white gold is therefore a little yellowish, which is why it is rhodium plated: it is dipped in a rhodium bath to give it a steel-white color. This rhodium plating is to be renewed after several years, depending on the type of skin.

Our white gold palladium is composed of 75% pure yellow gold with the Fairmined label, 13 to 16% palladium (depending on our jewels) and 10% silver, these two metals being recycled. This makes it a more precious metal than the usual white gold, because palladium is a member of the platinum family. Moreover, it is a color that most of the time you have never seen on a jewel.

We don't like the "yellowish" tint that white gold takes on when the rhodium plating fades, so we use white gold palladium, even for white gold. We soak it in a rhodium plating bath to give it that brighter white hue. This makes it a more valuable white gold than what you usually find in jewelry stores. When the rhodium layer disappears, little by little, you may be seduced by the color of the raw white gold that will reappear!

It is mainly for women who already have a white gold engagement ring that we propose this metal, for harmony reasons.

Silver 925/1000

Silver is the whitest metal, it is highly valued for its clarity, brightness, and brilliant whiteness. But it is softer than gold and will therefore take more scratches and marks of blows. You have to be prepared to see the passage of time on your wedding ring. Not all of our material effects can be achieved on silver.

People with acidic skin can eventually turn the silver black in the first 48 hours of wearing the jewelry, but this is quite rare and most of the time it is enough to gently brush the jewelry with a white toothpaste and it is done. If not, a cleaning with a silver revival product, and your wedding ring will be white again.

Is it worse to have a silver wedding band than a gold one? A silver wedding band is more affordable, but the textures will hold up much less. It's not the same for jewelry such as necklaces or earrings, as they are subject to much less pressure and shock than wedding rings, which are worn daily on the hands.

Platinum

Platinum 950/1000 (alloyed with copper) is a steel grey, rather metallic color. There are fans of platinum, and others who find its color too "cold". As there is no Fairmined platinum available at the moment, we no longer offer it and focus on gold mined by Fairmined mining communities.
