On which finger should you wear your wedding ring?

The wedding ring, synonymous with union, is an important piece of jewelry, since it is destined to accompany you and your spouse for the rest of your lives. You've probably been told repeatedly that the wedding ring should be worn above the engagement ring. But on which finger and which hand should you really wear your wedding ring? In this article, we'll see that practices vary from country to country.

Which hand should you wear your wedding ring on?

Just like the engagement ringIn France, it's traditional to wear your wedding ring on your left hand. It's usually placed just above the engagement ring to form an inseparable duo. But why the left hand? There are several reasons for placing a wedding ring on the left hand. The first, which you probably know, is that the ring finger of the left hand is said to possess a vein directly connected to the heart. A false theory, but one that dates back centuries. The second reason is that the vast majority of people are right-handed. Wearing your wedding ring on your left hand would therefore be more judicious, so as not to wear it out too quickly in the course of daily tasks.

By contrast, in other countries such as Spain, Germany, Russia and Poland, the wedding ring is often placed on the ring finger of the right hand. This is generally the case in Orthodox and Protestant marriages.

When widowed, the wedding ring is changed to the right hand. The spouse may decide to move his or her wedding ring to indicate the loss of his or her spouse.

Finally, it's also possible to move your wedding ring because of a problem with the ring's fit. Sometimes the ring becomes too small or too large as the finger thickens or thins over the course of a lifetime. Rest assured, we can usually resize your ring to solve this problem.

Which finger for her wedding ring?

As for the left hand, the French tradition is to wear the wedding ring on the ring finger. This religious custom refers to the fact that the bridegroom would direct the ring towards the index finger, reciting "In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit" until it reached the ring finger.

There are also other beliefs, such as in China, where the meaning of the covenant is unique. Each finger is assigned to a member of the family and thus has a role to play in building the couple. For example, the thumb symbolizes parents, the index finger siblings, the middle finger ourselves, the ring finger our spouse and the little finger our children.
